Architecture: Creating a Micro Extension With - Projecting window As architects, we are always thinking of creative ways to improve the houses we are refurbishing our customers. This can, of course, often involve expanding, but it still means looking for opportunities to improve what is already there. Windows are an example, rather than seeing them as elements that bring light, views and ventilation of a building, we like to think of them as something special, and look for the opportunity to make mini spaces themselves. A great way to exploit this potential is to modify an existing window opening - or make a new - and add a projection window.

Projecting windows include windows, which extend inside floor and generally the ground outside as well, and oriel windows, which are cantilevered from the wall. Both can be a great and relatively inexpensive way to add volume to a space, reaching out to the light and views and bring them inside, and create a place to rest and meditate. The updating of a feature classic
These two windows with contemporary details are a nice counterpoint to traditional exterior wall. Standard old windows can be updated with thin frames, full height glass, angles and panel glass roof, which all contribute to a general feeling of lightness.

the same oriel interior view shows the window seat nestled in the new space. This (almost) makes you sit in the garden without venturing outside. Wood paneling on one side incorporates a hinged window to let cool breezes and birdsong.

The color and texture contrast seat timber and the side panel with the pure white walls and act as a warm background for the seat and scatter cushions. These panels also show both sides of a picture frame around the outside view.

Think outside the box
relatively simple design gestures can often make a big difference. This oriel window first floor, built in an ecological family home in Gloucestershire, is centered on the gable wall and roof above. However, the front was inclined so as to maximize views of the nearby forest. It also creates interesting shadows on the wall and makes the overall composition that bit more special.

Traditionally, most of the windows have flat and sloped sides fronts. But this modern reinterpretation removed the flat forehead, keeping only the sloping sides. The result is an outside corner with views in two directions.
