Set your zones
people often think that you either open or separate rooms. The reality is not so black and white, like the relationship between the different zones can be manipulated by varying degrees, to emphasize their separation or integration. Variations in the grade, flooring, state of the ceiling, the furniture layout and many other features can all contribute to this fine adjustment.
In the example seen here, there is a strong feeling that you enter the living space when you go down the steps, despite the area being a space open plan leading to the kitchen.

Create views in layers
When thinking about ideas for opening your home, look for opportunities to develop with views "layers". The house in this picture illustrates the idea of "layer" Well, as you can see in a dining room (a layer) through a kitchen area (two layers) to a garden beyond (three layers) . These "layers" gives an illusion of more space and depth that would otherwise be felt.

go for visual separation
When adding or modifying a building, creating a clear visual separation between new and existing elements of the building can really enhance the sense of extra space.
In this house extension "kept away" - meaning that it is visually separated - from the back wall of the house The original glass is standard. also a visual highlight, doubling the effect.
This really creates the sense that you are passing from one space to another, not only looking through one unified space.
the room in this example is already a generous size, but in a much smaller house - say a Victorian terrace. - Separate visually extending a similar way could be even more dramatic

Use the daylight as a highlighter
Daylight is the most wonderful magnifier of the interior If you can bring more natural light into your home, he will have a great effect to maximize the sense of space -. and even in an area already opened up, which is usually an advantage.
There needs to be done intelligently, however, as too much light flooding - particularly too much direct sunlight - can be overwhelming, which reduces the overall contrast and bleaching everything out (and reduce the impact of all of your carefully created layers). So try to use daylight to create highlight points among the layers, improving the visual separation and the creation of a greater depth.
In this open corridor plan daylight is brought from a skylight above the field of view of environment; this means that the intermediate layer is demonstrated by the sunlight, which increases the overall sense of depth.

think light angles
in addition to using the daylight to create focal points, as described above, another good tip is to think of the angle from which the light comes and how it is illuminating different spaces and areas in your views.
Daylight from a high angle is usually more intense and reach further inside than a slight angle, so use the glazed roof lights and position of windows and doors as top to the ceiling as you can to maximize the airy feeling. Avoid heavy curtains valances over the windows that block out these useful high angle light.

spaces designed to "read" more than once
a great way to give the impression of more space to put things in place so you see - or, in terms of architecture, "read" - the same space twice from different points of view in the house
here, the goal is not only to implement a layered perspective, as described above but to put in place. many who use the same spaces but seen from different viewpoints.
This works especially well in double-height spaces, where we see a space that you have, you see again the gallery or landing above.

Use an island to give effect to individual spaces
kitchen islands are probably the most common device for defining areas in an open space, which is one of the main reasons why they are so popular (although many people do not realize that this is the reason).
For Marking clearly where the different areas within an open space are, you get the benefits of openness and light penetration day while maintaining a comfortable nationally.
Well defined areas are not only functional, they also help people feel more comfortable in a space. In a room with a kitchen island, for example, a visitor subliminally be aware that as long as they stay away from the "kitchen side" of the island, they are not in the way of the stove, their place being on the "coffee side".

But really small spaces, scramble your areas ...
After describing the importance of defining the areas, it might seem contrary talking to blur the boundaries between them. In small houses, however, we will sometimes deliberately overlap those limits.
In this example, a kitchen was once a small box of a room, was opened by removing the wall (you can see the beam in the top of the photo showing the line where the wall used to be). With the wall gone, the kitchen was allowed to stretch out in the dining room next door, not only giving a greater sense of space, but also physically larger kitchen. Daylight and extra depth also has space for meals, making it feel bigger, too.
Here, a separation device, such as a kitchen island, would prevent the kitchen area flow into the dining room, so the feeling of it being larger would be lost, which is why, in this case, blurring the lines or areas has improved space.
