Born in Genoa, Italy, in 1937 into a family of builders, Renzo Piano graduated from the Politecnico di Milano in 1964, where he was very involved in the community life of the university. "It is true, I come from a family of builders, but I am also a very strong social experience of community life ... This funny bouillabaisse emotion is very rich," Piano said in an interview Marcus Fairs . "It is stupid to say that coming from a family of builders was a good thing, because you can learn later, but it was good because it away from me formality.
After leaving, he worked on various large projects with renowned architects, including Louis Kahn, Richard Rogers (with whom he founded Piano & Rogers from 1971 to 1977) and Peter Rice ( with whom he shared Atelier Piano & Rice 1977-1981), before going to establish Renzo Piano Building Workshop (of RPBW) in 1981.

The Shard, London 00-2012
© Chris Martin
One of the most emblematic projects Piano worked on the Tower Bridge of London, more commonly known as the Shard. He managed to get something special with the tower by creating a mixed-use space that is both private and public. Very often, skyscrapers are closed to the inhabitants of a city and exist as symbols of power, wealth and exclusion, but the Tower Bridge in London has been designed not only for use by the city, but also loved by.
It houses offices, a hotel, restaurants and bars, and an observation gallery on the 68th, 69th and 72th floors, open to all (tickets must be purchased in advance). The Shard is like a vertical city, with commercial, residential and public all accessible by public transport.

Academy California Science is one of the largest natural history museums in the world, and is located in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. It houses more than 25 million species.
The original structure was damaged by an earthquake, and Piano was taken to create a replacement. Its structure combines form and function, and effectively conveys a love for nature and an appreciation of the fragility of the earth with its sustainable design.

Centre Pompidou, Paris 1971-1977

the Pompidou or Beaubourg Centre in Paris, is a multi-disciplinary space of the public - a museum, a library, a design center and a music center.
It is composed primarily of glass and steel, with different colored tubes protruding from the structure, in great contrast to most other cultural institutions in Paris. 'The Beaubourg is ... about the joy of living. It is a rebellion, ' Piano says Marcus Fairs.
The protests in 1968 sought to overthrow the government of Pompidou. Although the revolution never happened, "this was a very active period of the policy, and you could argue that this was part of the concept [for the building] ... We wanted to catch up with what was happening at the time" Richard Rogers explains in an interview on the project.

The Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome was completed in 02 by RPBW. Its construction was announced as a competition by the City of Rome in 1993; they wanted a multipurpose complex where various musical and cultural events could be organized. "It is a true" city "for music, say RPBW.
Pictured above is the Santa Cecilia Hall, which has 2,800 seats and is used for symphony concerts. The cherry wood ceiling was carefully constructed to ensure the room became a place "where listening to music is almost a religious experience, 'said RPBW.

Kansai International Airport Terminal Building, Japan 1988-1994

Located on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, the Kansai International airport was built to provide relief to the Osaka International airport overcrowded. The construction of an artificial island was started in 1987 and involved 1 million workers and 10 million hours over three years. It took the land of three mountains to fill a sea wall needed for the construction.
long, thin shape of the terminal resembles a glider seen from the side. It was specially designed to be able to withstand earthquakes, which are common in the region.

of course, the seat of the Renzo Piano building workshop are no less remarkable than most other structures he designed to over the years. It is built on a sloping hillside on the edge of Genoa who trundles towards the sea.
The offices are a series of terraces built largely with glass and wood, giving them a greenhouse sensation like that connects the quiet landscape around them. As the offices are, they must be up there with the best.

the museum itself was designed by Louis Kahn in 1972, but his collection has grown dramatically and quickly exceeded the space of the gallery allowed. RPBW designed and built a new building, doubling around the gallery space and adding in the classrooms, studios and a large auditorium.
While the new Piano building echoes the oldest structure, it has its own distinctive character -. Light, open and transparent

to mark 500 year anniversary of the discovery of America, Columbus celebrations in 1992 motivated the other regeneration of Port Antico (old port) in Genoa, the birthplace of Renzo Piano.
Along with the restoration of many historic buildings, many new structures were built, too. The aim was to revive the historic center of Genoa with the old port, and create additional lively and beautiful area of the city.
