The family living here wanted to review the entire house. They laid down and out, adding a neat extension in a filling site to the rear of the house. But perhaps adding most striking is the black walnut staircase. We built a new staircase to connect all levels together, says Webster. "It also creates spaces with double height throughout, which helps to increase the levels of light and make the design of the house feel more generous." And with the lights on at night and large windows glowing, it is easy to see how the new extension has earned its nickname "the lantern".

"We had originally submitted plans to fill this extension to be full height, 'Webster said. But the planning process has been long and the authorities have set a limit to the height of the extension. "However, it still works beautifully, she said. "It was always designed to be light, adding to the home without compromising its aesthetic period."

the owners had lived abroad and were influenced by Japanese design, which incorporates many natural materials. There was also a large tree in the garden, we had dropped because it was dangerous, said Webster. "The idea behind the staircase was to create an internal tree growing in the house instead .

There is a second entrance to the house that overlooks the staircase landing between the top floor and the first floor. "The staircase is in the main body of the house so you get a double height space by the front door," says Webster. The front door, seen here, is at the bottom of these stairs. "This encourages the right view to the rear of the house, too. The staircase has essentially created a very light five-story "

The house was renovated following a strategy of strong sustainable development and includes glazing increased so that it has a passive solar gain. It also contains a heat recovery system (MVHR), internal thermal insulation and waterproof design to the air, which results in a dramatic lowering its carbon footprint.

stairs now operates from the bottom of the house to up in a logical, vertical elevation. This is a huge improvement over what was there originally. "Before, you had to cross the house on some levels to access the next set of stairs, said Webster. "By positioning the stairs on one side, we have freed the floor plan, creating open spaces that are not consumed by stairs.
Rather than installing completely solid wood railings, stairs have glass sections, which give a better view of the stairs as they ride through the house. "It also has a Enables light to flow through the space, Webster said.

The staircase is compact in size, with a floor space of about 2.5m to 3m. "The staircase is a very complex design and it is difficult to get it to feel generous about what is a pretty tight footprint, while trying to make it user friendly, said Webster.
The owners also were keen to be lined, so Webster designed the stairs with carpet embedded in each of them, in order not hide too much wood. "It also highlights each step," she said, if you really feel that you climb through the house. "The handrail was carved and smooth recessed into the frame, which is also lit inside. "You feel more like you stroking your way rather than walk up, says Webster.
