distinguishing Style
the International Style - that emerged in the early decades of modern architecture in the years 1920 and 30 - was light and open. Kahn has avoided this pioneering its own, new style of modern architecture. He enjoyed the mass and weight and wanted to bring the presence of symbolic and monumental in architecture.
"In many ways, Kahn was the ultimate iconoclast. His buildings seem markedly different from that of his modernist contemporaries. Kahn showed us that there was another way to be modern, " said Alex Newson. "Its buildings are undeniably modern, but they are also elementary, archaic and spiritual."

This was the first major commission of Kahn. The facade is brick and glass, designed to evoke different responses to the changing light of day. The contrast between the solid brick walls on the side of buildings and lined steel glass facade is characteristic of the use of Kahn both empty and mass in creating the structure.

natural light was a key factor in building the museum. The building is a compilation of cylindrical structures - Kahn is standing inside one of them here. Skylights at the top of each structure let in light, which is diffused by aluminum reflectors to protect from sunlight. Arches and vaults referring to Roman architecture, perhaps inspired by European travel Kahn.

the building of the national Assembly in Dhaka, Bangladesh, has been described as magnum opus of Kahn, and was completed posthumously in 1983.
structure, although modern, is rooted in the culture and architecture style of its surroundings. He used local materials which withstand the desert climate - cast in place concrete laced with white marble - and became a symbol of pride and Bangladeshi culture. Alex added that since Bangladesh declared independence " building took more importance, elevating it beyond architecture and become an icon for a fledgling democracy ".
